    Value judgements about goodness become profound when they go from unspoken to spoken,

    Outrage is introduced when one says of their own value judgement that it’s (a) superior, and thus (b) ought be legally binding on others.

    That moralizing feels wrong to social progressives, for whom Mourdock’s preference –and the collective comfort level of well-known Republican Christian men– ought NOT (so we loudly argue) be coercive to American women who think of life differently to their current government.

    Meanwhile christendom is giving social conservatives every reason to trust their own hearts (and their preachers) over today’s professorial opinion on religio-political legislation.

    To many, simplicity simply feels less icky.
