I agree with you entirely that there would be plenty of shame and embarrassment, and one would have difficulty ever being proud about a victory gained under these circumstance.
But the conflict emerges when I think about all the more mundane cheating, that happens all the time. All teams (?) have players who dive, or commit intentional fouls. So by extension, most victories involve cheating - yet we don't feel that those are cheapened, because everybody does it. Is there some sort of principled way to separate "extreme" cheating from the more mundane cases, to allow for pride in those other victories?

While I weaseled out of actually saying that I’d want John Terry (or Robert Green, perhaps) to do the same thing, I’m personally quite conflicted about this. Personally I would prefer England to lose (yes even if it was in the final) than to have won by such means. I would be embarrassed and the victory would be cheapened. Having said that, I do agree that the main culprits in this are Fifa for not fully addressing the issue. If players know that there will be no real consequences for their actions then temptation will invariably win the day over moral conduct. A years retrospective ban from international sport would give some food for thought.

Don’t really agree with you here I’m afraid.
