[...] The Kuli Roberts column, Bitch’s Brew, has been cancelled by Avusa and the Sunday World newspaper following the publication of a “racist” column which expressed various stereotypes related to a subsection of South Africans sometimes described as ‘coloureds’. But as offensive as the column might have been to some, is there ever a good reason to deny free expression of views? Read more at Synapses. [...]

    Hey

I actually thought her piece was pretty funny! Especially having lived in Cape Town. Perhaps a touch offensive, as all satire should be, but certainly not worthy of being fired for it, and that’s assuming anyone should be fired for writing this sort of thing. I think to call her racist is very, very harsh. I think it’s pretty clear she was aiming for satire, and while she certainly isn’t the most sophisticated writer out there, she managed to do an OK job.

I’d like you to expand a bit on the equality in actuality vs equality in treatment that you touch on, I think that would make for quite an interesting piece, and I’d like to see you give it a fuller treatment. Because I think you’ve raised something quite interesting about equality in SA and more generally the idea itself.
