Hateful speech, hateful characters (but good TV)
A disjointed and incomplete reflection on what it means to hate, and what the best television shows ever created are. I reckon The Wire has to rank, as does Battlestar Galactica. Mock me if you like.

The ANC’s election strategy: Blackmail
Instead of presenting a case for why one should vote for the ANC in the upcoming local government elections, some spokespersons for the ANC seem more intent on using emotional blackmail to make voters think that they have no options other than voting for the ruling party. After all, who wants to risk killing Mandela or going to hell?

Stephen Watson, RIP.
Stephen Watson died on the morning of 10 April, 2011, after developing a cancer in February of the same year. All of us who knew and worked with him will be saddened by his death, and notice our own loss. For he was a gifted and patient teacher, as well as a valuable member of the South African literary community.

Floyd Shivambu and ‘hate speech’ against Carien du Plessis
While it’s unclear whether the concept of ‘hate speech’ even merits legal prohibition, one thing does seem clear: Personal insults against journalists (or anyone else) seem unlikely contenders to be regarded as hate speech. Also, does the Equality Court definition of what counts as hate speech accord with the definition found in the Bill of Rights?

Why we should reject the Bill of Responsibilities
Rejecting Primedia and LeadSA’s Bill of Responsibilities does not have to mean rejecting the values of respect, equality, and dignity. On the contrary, it is the Bill of Responsibilities itself that is a threat to some of our Constitutional values, in that it attempts to dictate a certain way of life to us – thereby undermining our freedom to choose.
